Strikeline Lightning Network
Local lightning alert network for NYS fire training. This is an early prototype concept: hardware, software, and operating procedures will continue to evolve.
What is Strikeline?
Strikeline is an experimental distributed lightning detection network designed to support fire training operations across the North Country and beyond. Each node uses a dedicated lightning sensor, local microcontroller, and LTE backhaul to report nearby strikes and basic environmental conditions back to this dashboard.
The goal is to give instructors and safety officers a tool that:
- Provides a local view of lightning activity near training sites.
- Can be extended to multiple TADs and county training facilities.
- Integrates with other decision tools (heat index, AQI, weather briefings).
This page is currently wired to a live backend API with test nodes and data. Physical hardware is still in early prototype stages.

This is a simple readout from the current prototype backend. Layout and visuals will evolve as the network grows.

Map shows the last known location of each Strikeline node and recent triangulated lightning events. Animated ⚡ markers indicate more recent strikes.

How to Use Strikeline with Training
When this tool is live, it should be used together with:
- Your agency’s written lightning & severe weather procedures.
- Official products from National Weather Service (NWS).
- The Weather & AQI page on this site for heat index and smoke/air quality concerns.
Strikeline will never make decisions for you; it is an additional piece of situational awareness to help you decide when to pause, relocate, or cancel outdoor training. As the network grows, historical data and patterns may also become useful for instructors and safety officers in the field.
